The plot of the third opera in Wagner’s tetralogy centres on the fate of one of the most significant heroes in Germanic and Scandinavian mythology – Wotan’s grandson Siegfried. Having killed Fafner the dragon, he takes possession of the ring of the Nibelungs and becomes Brünnhilde’s bridegroom. With one blow of the sword Nothung, the young hero smashes Wotan’s spear, heralding the impending twilight of the gods. The supreme god Wotan is a key figure in all four operas in the cycle. In a sense, the entire story of the Ring is seen through the prism of his personality, and Wagner imbued this character with tremendous strength and a powerful nature. At the Mariinsky Theatre Vladimir Felyauer has performed several lead roles in the bass repertoire to great acclaim, among them Attila (Attila), the King of Egypt (Aida) and the Marchese di Calatrava (La forza del destino). The soloist’s hero-like appearance and magnificent vocal gift are utterly ideal for the majestic image of the father of the gods.
