The director, an opera production team and singers started to work on this production a few months ago, whilst the last few weeks before the premiere were the most intense time for everyone. Graham Vick, who is preparing to introduce his version of the opera by Janáček to the St Petersburg audience, last week took part in a meeting with the public and the media. The director saw parallels with a drama in the style of Agatha Christie and with the works of Mikhail Bulgakov. Vick believes that The Makropulos Affair is one of the hardest operas for the director (he already worked on a production of this opera at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen). According to the director, this work by Janáček lies farther than any other from Russian culture. At the same time, the black humour and grotesque draws it close to works by Bulgakov, the director believes. |

Take notice! | ![]() | Leoš Janáčeks opera The Makropulos Affair directed by Graham Vick is going to be a real detective story, in which both the librettos author and director will keep the main idea in secret until the end of performance. According to the producers idea, it is important to emphasise the satirical aspect of the opera – this is an unusual solution for productions of operas by Janáček. Graham Vick decided to abandon any experiments after the manner of futurism. Outwardly simple staging of the opera should help the viewer to focus on the development of the plot of the story-thriller. Mystical overtones in this performance will be underlined by the everyday design of costumes and scenery. |

Take notice! | ![]() | Opera by Richard Strauss The Woman without a Shadow is especially valuable for its rich, lush and colorful orchestration. Sometimes one gets a feeling that there is simply too much of the music :-)). The opera orchestration is truly luxurious. Strauss wrote the score in such a way, so that each individual musician gets a chance to play a solo on numerous occasions in the opera, thus creating a unique ensemble of musicians in a large orchestra. Take notice of the exquisite beauty and complexity of the quartet of cellos in the second act! Undoubtedly, this opera in a colourful yet delicate staging, will be most valuable for those who appreciate the exceptional talent of Strauss the symphonist.

Exhibition. Mariinsky artists on vintage photo-cards. Photographs. Alexander Blok Apartment Museum. Concert programmes. 14 October ... 16 November. Vintage cards.
![]() |
13 October saw the opening of an exhibition Mariinsky artists on vintage photo-cards at the Alexander Blok Apartment Museum, dedicated to 150 anniversary since the opening of the building of the Mariinsky Theatre. The exhibition consists of 150 vintage cards from the collections of the State Museum of St Petersburg. They capture the most remarkable artists of the St Petersburg Imperial Theatre of the late XIX – early XX century, many of whom lived in the Kolomna area, which is near the Mariinsky Theatre, and were neighbours, and some of them good friends, of the poet Alexander Blok. On many of them, he left memories in diaries, letters and his poetic works. Among them are incorrigible wagnerian singer Ivan Yershov, the tsar-bass Fyodor Chaliapin, the tragic muse of dance, Olga Spesivtseva, inspired dancer Elena Lukom. Faces of these people can be seen in old postcards from the museum collection. At the exhibition one can also listen rare recordings of famous opera singers of the past, watch fragments of video performances of ballet dancers, read Bloks and other poets poetry dedicated to the Mariinsky Theatre artists. The exhibition also displays a number of theater posters and programmes from the late XIX – early XX century. The exhibition is also holding a number of Saturday walking tours of the Kolomna area:
