On tour to Holland, Switzerland and France
|
| |
We are looking forward to starting the new season at the Mariinsky Theatre and Concert Hall in a few days. Prior to that, our Orchestra, Chorus and opera soloists along with Valery Gergiev are going on a short tour, so that were back to St Petersburg right on time before the new season begins. On this tour we are going to visit Holland, Switzerland and France.
Our operatic forces are going to be in Rotterdam on 4 & 5 September performing within the framework of the annual Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival. Valery Gergiev is the founder and artistic director of this festival. Traditionally, the festival runs every autumn for about ten days and each year it becomes an important event in the cultural life of the whole country. For instance, this year one of the festival concerts, conducted by Valery Gergiev, will be attended by Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands Beatrix. This year, along with the symphony concerts by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and other cultural activities (such as: arts exhibitions, movies, chamber music recitals, meetings with artists etc.) our theatre will be participating in the festival giving two performances in the Concert Hall of De Doelen arts center. One evening we shall present a symphonic work that requires enormous resources: Eighth Symphony by Gustav Mahler and the other evening we shall give a staged performance (by Alexei Stepanyuk) of Rodion Shchedrins opera The Enchanted Wanderer: for the first time in the Netherlands.
Mahlers Eighth Symphony will also be performed in Basel on 6 September along with the Second Symphony by Shostakovich. This concert forms a part of the ongoing long-term project aimed at performing the cycle of Symphonies by Shostakovich in Basel featuring multiple orchestras conducted by Valery Gergiev.
The performance of Mahlers Eighth Symphony by opera soloists, Chorus and Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre under Valery Gergiev on 8 September will launch the new concert season at Salle Pleyel in Paris. Last season at the Mariinsky Concert Hall was marked with a project of an enormous artistic significance: a performance of complete symphonies by Gustav Mahler. In the upcoming concert season Valery Gergiev leads both the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre and the London Symphony Orchestra along with a range of various Choruses and singers in the performances of complete cycles of Mahlers Symphonies in New York (Carnegie Hall — in October, Avery Fisher Hall — in February) and in Paris (Salle Pleyel — in September, December and March). We are particularly proud that our theatre launches both of these ambitious cultural initiatives and takes part in a significant share of these concerts.

How have you spent your holiday?
|
| |
The time since the last season came to a close in July was rather intense for our theatre: whilst both the Mariinsky Theatre and the Mariinsky Concert Hall buildings experienced a range of scheduled maintenance works in order to be suitably prepared for the new season, our Orchestra, Chorus and opera soloists under Valery Gergiev performed in a number of venues in Germany, Spain, Slovenia, Sweden and Austria (and will shortly go to Holland, Switzerland and France).
Tell us how you have spent your holiday? Feel free to send us your stories, photograps or videos (or simply links to them) by e-mail on marketing@mariinsky.ru. Well be happy to learn how our theatre-goers have been spending their time this summer. The most interesting stories, photos and videos will be published on our social media resources and their authors will be awarded with a prize.
