Great soloists @ White Nights in July

Stars of the White Nights Festival is reaching its highest artistic attitudes as it hosts many of the greatest soloists from all over the world here, in St Petersburg. Nearly every night in the beginning of July features a remarkable event at the Mariinsky Concert Hall.

Pianists Alexei Volodin and Christian Blackshaw perform in recitals of a very specially selected works by Western European classics. Cellist David Geringas built a program for his recital based on a dialogue of two composers: Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann. By the way, this year the musical world celebrates bicentenary of the both composers. One of the highest standards in ensemble playing will be shown by the Soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic. Probably the most unusual solo recital will be presented by soprano Maria Guleghina. The program of her recital was shaped by the audience, i.e. by those who visited our web-site and selected 10 vocal works from a wide range of more than 50 arias and romances that Maria Guleghina proposed to be performed. The results of this vote are now revealed on our web-site.

Great orchestras @ White Nights in July

Evenings of symphonic music by the finest orchestras are specially selected in order to naturally complement performances of the finest soloists at the Mariinsky Concert Hall.

Esa-Pekka Salonen, composer and conductor, and also a friend of our theatre for years, will conduct the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in a concert of works by Richard Strauss and Hector Berlioz. Metamorphosen and Roméo et Juliette were both performed by our orchestra this season and therefore it must be even more exciting to listen to these works once again through the interpretation of another conductor. Maestro Salonen carefully programs his concers. For instance, Metamorphosen was performed in a series of his inaugural concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, whilst Roméo et Juliette reflects his artistic ambition to perform a cycle of music about love in a number of important European musical venues next season.

The Baltic Youth Philharmonic is an orchestra that was assembled just a couple years ago and it demonstrates a great example of a cultural investment when large and medium businesses work together in order to develop the region, the culture and to support the most gifted musicians. Young musicians, led by their young colleague, conductor Kristjan Järvi, all together work on accomplishing their music ideas, so that they do not need to spend their time on solving practical problems and they could focus on achieving only the best artistic results.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most famous orchestras in the world, comes to St Petersburg to perform under Valery Gergiev. Last time the Orchestra was in St Petersburg in 2003, the year of the city tercentenary, also performing at the Stars of the White Nights Festival. This year performance is quite remarkable for the Vienna Philharmonic as they will perform at the Mariinsky Concert Hall for the first time. The Orchestra is well-known for being rather demanding to the highest acoustic standards, but we are certain they will enjoy the environment and the acoustics of our Concert Hall.

  On tour: Mikkeli Festival 2010

Traditionally, in the beginning of July, our orchestra goes on tour to the Finnish town of Mikkeli, which runs an annual music festival under the artistic leadership of Valery Gergiev. In some way, this festival is a “companion” festival to the Stars of the White Nights, because often both festivals share a set of soloists who participate in the concerts. However, the festival in Mikkeli is built in a different format: a series of concerts of symphonic music are presented for 5-6 nights and every year they include a set of unusual works, which are performed by our orchestra exclusively for this festival. Often such performances become interesting artistic discoveries for us, and the ideas of the festival are continued in a range of unusual projects of our theatre in the long term. Mikkeli Festival is a festival full of different artistic highlights and its program is built on a number of the most original thoughts.
