III International Festival Brass Evenings at the Mariinsky

It was not so long ago that the sonorous word “brass” appeared in the active vocabulary of Russian musicians, but recently it has featured with increasing frequency on the pages of various music publications and on the playbills of concert halls. And that is as it should be – after all, it is connected with one of the most original phenomena of contemporary instrumentalism.
The words “brass band” is used to refer to orchestras or ensembles consisting exclusively of brass instruments. Such ensembles perform both original works for wind instruments and classical masterpieces that are imbued with a particular freshness and innovative feel in “brass variations”.
The Brass Evenings at the Mariinsky international festival is living proof of this. The festival programme includes not just appearances by the finest brass ensembles from Russia and abroad, but also master classes that are run during the festival by highly renowned musicians.
