Joshua Kangming Tan, silver medal recipient at the 2008 Dimitris Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition, is an internationally acclaimed conductor who recently made his debuts as Carnegie Hall, in Shanghai and in Taiwan. In 2010 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Chinese National Centre for Performing Arts. Singaporean newspaper Lianhe Zaobao named Joshua Kangming Tan the most talented musician in Singapore in 2009.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including an award from the Bruno Walter Foundation, a grant from the Singapore National Arts Council and the Charles Schiff Conducting Prize, presented by the Juilliard School for his outstanding achievements in conducting.

Joshua has drawn the attention of the world’s top conductors, and his mentors include James DePreist, Charles Dutoit, David Zinman and Kurt Masur.

He has conducted such orchestras as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Beethoven Orchester in Bonn, the Guanchzhou Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the Juilliard MAP Orchestra, the Orchestra of the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, the Gaoxiong Symphony Orchestra, the Musical Olympus chamber orchestra, St Petersburg Academic Capella, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic, Greece’s Colours of Athens orchestra and the Orquesta de Cadaqués. His successful debut with the Lyric Opera of Singapore in Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors in December 2005 led to him being offered annual engagements. In 2006 he appeared as Charles Dutoit’s assistant with the Guanchzhou Symphony Orchestra. In January 2007 he conducted the world premiere of the opera Intrigues in the Qing Imperial Court.

In the summer of 2008 he was awarded a grant by the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen, which is directed by David Zinman. Tan gave a breathtaking performance at the Aspen Music Festival at a concert at Harris Hall, where he conducted Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat in a live broadcast for KAJX radio.

His most significant appearances include his debut with the Macao Symphony Orchestra at the Macao Arts Festival in 2010, performances with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Musical Olympus international festival in St Petersburg, as well as performances of the operas Carmen at the Chinese National Centre for Performing Arts and Die Zauberflöte with the Lyric Opera of Singapore. Joshua is a graduate of the Juilliard School.
