Michael Kupfer


Baritone

In November 2013 Michael Kupfer sang Wotan (Rheingold) at the Teatro Municipal Sao Paulo in Brasil. He will perform the same role again at the “Tiroler Festspiele 2014”. In January he was invited to sing Hämerlein in Richard Strauss’ Feuersnot under the baton of Ulf Schirmer in a concert version at the Bayerischen Rundfunk. In February the artist presented himself at the royal opera in Stockholm as Jochanaan (Salome), a part he will also perform in Sao Paulo in September 2014. In 2014/15 he can be heard as Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte) and Don Fernando (Fidelio) as well as in a song recital with Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin in Erl. At the “Tiroler Festspiele 2015” the baritone will make his debut as Hans Sachs in Wagner’s Meistersinger, along with performances as Klingsor (Parsifal) and Gunther (Götterdämmerung). Prior to that, he will be performing Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde at the Wagner Festival in Wels and Faninal in Rosenkavalier in Beijing. Recent highlights in his career include appearances at the Royal Albert Hall London, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Tonhalle Zürich, the Aalto Theatre in Essen, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and in at the famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Since 2000 the artist is a regular guest at the “Tiroler Festspiele”, presenting himself in roles such as Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) by Johann Strauss, Donner and Gunther in Wagner’s The Ring, Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Klingsor (Parsifal), Wolfram (Tannhäuser) and Orest (Elektra). At the opening celebration of the new house of this festival he performed Count Almaviva in a production of Le nozze di Figaro. Michael Kupfer is a regular guest at festivals such as “Proms 97” in London, “Opernfestspiele München” or the “Music Festival Beijing”. Besides opera he devotes much of his time to oratorio and concert work. The Creation and The Seasons by Joseph Haydn, Bach’s St. John Passion and the St. Matthew Passion, Beethoven’s IX Symphony, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem and Mahler’s Das Lied Der Erde, to name a few titles. He was invited to Japan, Italy, Germany and Austria for recitals. He recently released a recording of Schubert’s Winterreise with Margarita Oganesjan at the piano. Michael Kupfer has worked with conductors such as Ingo Metzmacher, Marek Janowski, Gustav Kuhn, Marcello Viotti, Paul Daniels and Markus Stenz, etc. He was invited by important orchestras like The BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Rundfunkorchester des BR and the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest. The artist performed under stage directors such as Harry Kupfer, Willi Decker, Eike Grams, Pierre Audi, Keith Warner, Georges Delnon and Francois de Carpentier. Michael Kupfer is laureate of numerous competitions and foundations, e.g. the Richard Wagner foundation and the “Freunde der Bayerischen Staatsoper e.V.”. The famous opera magazine “Opernwelt” named the singer “best upcoming artist of the season” in 2009.
