Rodion Shchedrin @ White Nights
|
|
2010 started at our theatre with a landmark event — the performance of the opera
Enchanted Wanderer
by Rodion Shchedrin
and the meeting of the composer and audience, with the participation of Valery Gergiev. They gave a
ceremonial start
of an additional subscription series
of events at the Mariinsky Theatre
and Concert Hall devoted to a detailed study of the legacy of now living
classical composer. Our subscription Rodion Shchedrin at the Mariinsky Theatre
includes opera and ballet performances as well as concerts of music
of Shchedrin, and provides a unique opportunity to review the masterpieces of the
composer within a period of several months. Like our review of theatrical works by Prokofiev,
like the performance
of the complete Symphonies
by Mahler, or like the revealing
of the best masterpieces
of French music during the season 2009/10, a series of events
dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin is an important large-scale project of our theatre
as it defines one of the leading creative directions of our company.
Like with our other project, Prokofiev at the Mariinsky Theatre one can certainly note that our theatre is the only
music company in the world
that in such depth and detail
had come up to full scale study of
the repertoire of classical composer
of both the 20-th
and the 21-st century. Over
the past few years, our troupes of Ballet, Opera and Orchestra
directed by Valery Gergiev brought a number of innovative productions
of Shchedrins theatrical works
and his music in numerous concerts
in St Petersburg and on tour
in the Russian cities
and abroad. This year
we also released a new music CD
on the Mariinsky Label
that features a complete recording
of the opera Enchanted Wanderer
and other works by Shchedrin.
During the Stars of the White Nights Festival
for several consecutive nights we present our best achievements
in the fulfillment of Rodion Shchedrins works,
once again emphasising the importance of the composer of our time.

Meet the artist
We welcome everyone to come and see the pianist Anika Vavic, who will spend
a few days in St Petersburg as she performs in
the concert on 26 June. Anika is not only
a gifted musician, but also has a wonderful
sense of humour and fluetly speaks Russian,
English, German and her native Serbian. We are
absolutely confident that a chat
with Anika must be a wonderful
event for everyone who will attend
this meeting. Moreover, this gathering
will give a chance for everyone
who loves our theatre to meet offline (rather than
online) in a pleasant
informal environment. The meeting
will take place
on Friday 25 June at 7:15PM
in the foyer of the Mariinsky Concert Hall (i.e. before
the performance of Enchanted Wanderer on that evening). Please confirm whether you are
going to attend this meeting using our online service Doodle:
you only need to put there your name and e-mail
address or phone number (no registration required).
