About the performers

The Rimsky-Korsakov Central Exemplary Concert Orchestra of the Russian Navy was established in 1941 from front-line sailors invalided out for treatment, and by 1945 it had been awarded the title of “Exemplary Orchestra”. The ensemble participated in the Victory Parade on Red Square on 24 June 1945.

The orchestra’s multifaceted activities are remarkable for the concert programmes, radio and television recordings, and collaborations with Russia’s leading musicians in addition to its participation in international festivals. The orchestra has worked alongside Artur Eizen, Vladimir Troshin, Muslim Magomayev, Tamara Sinyavskaya, Yuri Bogatikov, Alexander Rozum and Oleg Ukhnalyov. The orchestra has collaborated with the trumpeter Timofei Dokschitzer and the saxophonist Margarita Shaposhnikova as well as the composers Boris Diev, Alexandra Pakhmutova and Georgy Sviridov. It has toured to Finland, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Germany, the USA and North Korea.

Today the Central Exemplary Concert Orchestra is one of the finest artistic bodies of the Armed Forces of Russia. It comprises a wind band, a vocal and instrumental ensemble and a separate group of solo vocalists. The ensemble’s musicians attend events featuring state VIPs and officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Russian Navy, including as part of international military and cultural collaboration. The orchestra is a regular participant in the Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow and the Principal Naval Parade in St Petersburg. The ensemble’s performances are held at the most prestigious concert venues (the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Moscow International Performing Arts Centre, the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia and the State Rooms of the Hermitage among others), as well as at individual fleet garrisons and naval bases.

The repertoire is based on Russian and international classics, contemporary music and Russian and Soviet songs about the sea and the naval fleet. As before, many prominent Russian composers and performing musicians continue their keen collaboration with the orchestra.

From 2007 to 2021 the orchestra was led by Captain 1st rank Alexei Karabanov, while in June 2021 the ensemble was taken over by Captain 2nd rank Valentin Lyashchenko. Also in 2019 Major Marat Gayanov was appointed Military Conductor of the Central Exemplary Concert Orchestra.
