Close of the IХ International Organ Festival Mariinsky

PROGRAMME:
Felix Mendelssohn
Six Organ Sonatas, Op. 65

Preformed by Karol Mossakowski (organ)

The IX Mariinsky Organ Festival will conclude with a performance by Karol Mossakowski – a prize-winner at the prestigious Grand Prix de Chartres competition (2016) and a regular guest performer at Mariinsky Theatre organ music concerts. His programme is to include Six Organ Sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn. The composer of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Italienische Sinfonie was a brilliant organist, composing a great deal of music for the instrument, and was, moreover, one of the first to include works by Bach in the programmes of his public concerts. In his sonatas, Mendelssohn enters a dialogue with Bach, including themes of Protestant chorales, and at the same time he lays the foundations for the later Romantic organ traditions of Liszt, Brahms and Reger. Today, Mendelssohn’s music is included in the repertoires of organists throughout the world, although performing all six sonatas at one and the same concert is a rare event indeed.
