Ilya Makarov is a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church. He studied at the faculty of history of the St Petersburg State University and the St Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy. Since 2009 he has directed the Clergy Chorus of the St Petersburg Metropolitan. Since 2011 he has organised and held concerts of religious music and exhibitions of fine art. He has run various projects at Mariinsky Theatre venues (Concert Hall and the Mariinsky II), the Great Hall of the St Petersburg State Philharmonic, the Alexandrinsky Theatre (historic stage) and Smolny Cathedral. Regularly appears on radio and television. Has written and presented the series of radio programmes Musical Poetics on Radio Maria.
