About the Concert

The Mariinsky Theatre is continuing its celebrations marking one hundred and thirty-five years since the birth of Igor Stravinsky which began in December 2016 with the revival of the orchestral Funeral Song. Stravinsky was one of those 20th century composers who expanded the possibilities of the piano and established its new timbre image.
The evening dedicated to his music opens with Les Noces, where the vocal roles are accompanied by four pianos and percussion ensemble; apropos, here the piano is also regarded as a percussion instrument. In the second part, pianist Alexei Volodin will perform the solos in two works by Stravinsky accompanied by the orchestra – the Concerto and the Capriccio.
