About the Concert

Marking twenty years of the project The Grand Chinese New Year Concert
The New Year concert The Silk Road and Fuchun Mountain Capriccio will feature the Shaanxi Province TV and Radio Orchestra from northern China and the Orchestra of Traditional Chinese Instruments from the Zhejiang Province in the south. Both orchestras have been recipients of the China National Arts Foundation Prize.
The name of the concert programme underlines the roots of the ensembles – the Silk Road begins in the Shaanxi Province, while the Fuchun Mountain, celebrated for its picturesque landscapes, is located in the Zhejiang Province.
In 2017 the project The Grand Chinese New Year Concert marks twenty years since its foundation. The first concert took place in 1998 in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna and since then it has taken place annually throughout the world. In 2017 more than thirty New Year concerts are planned in Europe and Asia.

About the performers

Zhang Lie (conductor)
Zhang Lie is a member of the Chinese Musicians' Association and the director of the China National Orchestra Society. He is also the Vice Secretary-General of the China Conductor Committee and a nationally acclaimed conductor. Currently Zhang Lie is the resident conductor of the China Radio, Film and Symphony Orchestra as well as the National Radio Orchestra. Previous positions include appointments as Art Director and Guest Conductor for the Central Conservatory of Music, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Taipei Municipal Orchestra of Chinese Traditional Music of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the resident conductor of the Guangdong Orchestra. Zhang Lie graduated from the Xi’an Conservatory of Music in 1984 and received further training at the faculty of conducting of the Chinese Central Conservatory of Music after which he attended master-classes in conducting under the guidance of Professor Baum in Germany.
Zhang Lie has worked in Europe, Asia and the United States as well as in China including appearances in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
He has written orchestral and ballet music, film scores and has had work commissioned from the National Orchestra, as well as producing concerto and vocal arrangements for more than a hundred works, and for this work he has received numerous awards.
His percussion concerto Random Thoughts of Guan Mountain has featured in the repertoires of traditional orchestras in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China. Major works in recent years include Symphonic Song of the Wind and Song of Resentment as well as music for the films Dumb Mama and Village of the Sour Jujube. His work for Fantasia Little Balang won first prize at the national competition and Boat Tracker of Huang River won the Gold Award at the national competition.

Fan Cong (guanzi)
Guanzi performer from the Shaanxi Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra; graduated from Xi’an Conservatory. He studied under Professor Wu Xiao-zhong and Professor Huiqing Yang. He performed at the XXIX world music educational forum Chinese Night at the Xi’an Conservatory. In 2010 he also performed during the autumn season at China's National Centre for Performing Arts. In 2012 he performed with the Xi’an Conservatory Orchestra as a soloist and was highly commended by Zhao Jiping. He is also a soloist for the New Year Concert, and has also participated in Italian-Chinese twin-town city cultural events. In 2011-2012, he received a scholarship from the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, came first in the youth group of the Shaanxi Instrumental Competition and the Shaanxi TV Instrument Competition. In 2013 he won the Gold and Silver Medals at the China Folk Music Competition. In 2014 he won the Gold Medal at the International instrument competition.

Lu Tingting (erhu)
Lu Tingting is a young erhu performer from the Traditional Orchestra (Zhejiang Dance and Opera Theatre). She studied the erhu with her father from the age of five. In 2007 she entered the Shenyang Conservatory to study traditional Chinese music, and as a brilliant student she studied with Professor Ying Zaisheng. She subsequently entered the Shanghai Conservatory as a graduate student, studying with Professor Wang Yongde. Gave a recital in 2011. Has won as the finalist of the Chinese Music Golden Bell Award for erhu on three occasions, was a finalist of the Shanghai Spring international erhu competition, won the Gold Medal at the CCTV Chinese Traditional Instrument Competition Liaoning Group, the Gold Medal of the Liaoning Province Professional Instrumental Competition, the Gold Medal at the Zhejiang Music and Dance Competition and the Gold Medal of the Youth Musician Competition. She has performed with the Zhejiang Traditional Orchestra as a soloist numerous times, and has also been invited to perform in Japan, Australia, the USA, South-East Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and Europe for cultural exchange programmes.
