Alexander Serov was a fellow-pupil and companion of another founding father of Russian music critique and studies – Vladimir Stasov; unlike the latter, he was also an outstanding opera composer. All of his operas were staged at the Mariinsky Theatre and were great successes. In these the composer attempted to combine Wagner’s principles of drama and Russian national operatic traditions. The programme for the evening includes highlights from the opera Judith.
