The Teatro Regio was established in Turin in 1740 as the theatre of the Savoy Court, becoming incredibly important towards the end of the 19th century – a period of great prestige with the presence of Arturo Toscanini and the world premieres of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and La  Bohème.
In 1936 a fire destroyed the old theatre. It was rebuilt by Carlo Mollino and inaugurated in 1973 with I vespri siciliani directed by Maria Callas. The new Teatro Regio has one of the largest stages in Europe.
Its primary commitment is to the opera and ballet season, which is complimented by the concert season and a full programme dedicated to schools.
Today, the Teatro Regio in Turin has an undisputed role in the foreground of the international arts scene with its triumphs in Germany, Spain, France, China and Japan. In December 2013 under the direction of Gianandrea Noseda the theatre undertook its second tour of Japan, presenting the very best of Italy’s musical culture. In 2014 the company of the Teatro Regio has been invited to St Petersburg, Edinburgh, Paris, Chicago, Toronto, Ann Arbor and New York (Carnegie Hall).
Gianandrea Noseda is among the most sought-after conductors of our time. He has propelled Turin’s Teatro Regio into the ranks of the world’s leading opera houses since becoming its Music Director in 2007. In addition to conducting numerous productions in Turin each season, Gianandrea Noseda’s work with the theatre’s orchestra and chorus has changed the international profile of the Teatro Regio di Torino and resulted in recording projects and worldwide tours and residencies in Asia (Japan and China) and Europe.
