Grand opening ceremony of the Years of Youth Exchange of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China

2014 and 2015 have been designated years of exchange for Russian and Chinese young people, one of the main aims of the programme being to increase student contact between the two nations as much as possible.
At the opening of the Sino-Russian Year of Youth at the Mariinsky II there will be a performance by a specially formed orchestra consisting of fifty Russian and sixty-three Chinese musicians. The orchestra will be conducted by maestro Valery Gergiev. The programme includes Dmitry Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto (1st movement, soloist – Daniil Kharitonov) and Chinese composers Chen Gang and He Zhanhao’s violin concerto Butterfly Lovers (soloist – Xie Haoming) among other works.
The concert will also feature the Students’ Chorus of the Polytechnic University and the Fraternity chorus of students of the People’s Republic of China from the Institute of Music, Theatre and Dance of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.

Accreditation for the concert closes at 16:00 on 27 March via the Press Service of the Mariinsky Theatre.
