II INTERNATIONAL CHORUS FESTIVAL MASLENITSA IN SONG
20 – 26 February 2017

The Mariinsky Theatre will be hosting the Maslenitsa in Song festival for the second time. Once again its programme will be varied and rich in events featuring choral ensembles from Russia, Slovenia, Norway, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and France. The festival will also feature the Mariinsky Orchestra.
The festival opens at the Mariinsky-II with the opera The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. On 21 February at the Concert Hall there will be a performance by the Norwegian-Slovenian ensemble Utopia & Reality, while on 22 February the Festino chorus and soloists of the Saarbrücken Kammerchor will appear with a programme of German choral music from the 17th–19th centuries. At the matinee on 23 February the Mariinsky Theatre will host a performance of the opera Brundibár by Hans Krása, which he composed at the Theresienstadt concentration camp not long before his death. In the evening at the same venue there will be a concert by the Mariinsky Chorus with cellist Alexander Ramm. Commencing at noon the following day in the Stravinsky Foyer there will be a major choral marathon, while at the evening concert at the Mariinsky II there will be a performance of Gloria and Magnificat by John Rutter with choruses from the St Petersburg and Moscow Universities. On 25 February at the Stravinsky Foyer folklore ensembles will present a reconstruction of folk Shrovetide events, and in the evening at the Concert Hall the ensembles Le Poème harmonique (Paris) and Intrada (Moscow) will perform French Baroque music. The festival concludes with a matinee performance on 26 February with a concert featuring children's and youth choruses who were winners at the championship of the World Choir Games in 2017.
