Young Pianists at the Stars of the White Nights

Concert Hall, 19 – 30 June 2013
Five concerts, seven names – original, highly promising and talented young musicians will be performing recitals and in symphony music programmes with the Mariinsky Orchestra at the Stars of the White Nights festival

The eldest of the pianists was born in 1984 and the youngest are Alexander Malofeyev, who in May 2013 won the Astana Piano Passion competition in the under-fourteen age category, and Daniil Trifonov, who in March 2013 at the age of fourteen made his debut at the illustrious Carnegie Hall in New York.

The concert series opens with Alexander Lubyantsev – a pianist who created a veritable furore at the XIV Tchaikovsky International Competition; although he was not a finalist there he did receive the music critics’ special award. During the concert Lubyantsev will be presenting a work of his own, as the pianist is currently taking his first steps as a composer.

Philipp Kopachevsky, a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic and a prize-winner at prestigious international competitions blessed with powerfully lyrical individuality, will present a programme of Romantic music featuring two of Chopin’s piano concerti.

Alexander Romanovsky will be appearing with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev in a programme of popular works including Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto.

Seong Jin Cho, recipient of the 3rd prize at the XIV Tchaikovsky International Competition, will be performing a recital for the first time in St Petersburg, having captured the hearts of audiences at the final concert of the aforementioned competition with her heartfelt rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Dumka. This time the musician will be performing a programme of works by Chopin, Schubert and Ravel as well as Prokofiev’s Second Sonata.
The series of concerts will come to a close with Alexander Kutuzov and Alexander Malofeyev, winners of the Astana Piano Passion competition in different age categories, and young pianist Daniil Kharitonov who has already performed at the Concert Hall.
