The Teatro di San Carlo at the Mariinsky Theatre

On 19, 20 and 21 October as part of the Year of Russia and Italy the Mariinsky Theatre will be hosting a tour by the oldest theatre in Europe: two hundred and fifty people from the orchestra, chorus, opera company, stage staff and acrobats have arrived from Naples to give two performances of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera I pagliacci (staged by Daniele Finzi Pasca) as well as a gala concert.

Finzi Pasca worked on I pagliacci with his own production team, also inviting first-class circus performers who appear in his Donka and productions by the Cirque du Soleil. The production involves the use of unique archive film material of Ruggero Leoncavallo seated at the piano. The lead roles in the opera will be performed by Kristin Lewis (Nedda), Carl Tanner (Canio) and Dario Solari (Tonio). Renowned maestro Donato Renzetti will be conducting.

On 21 October highly acclaimed Italian maestro Nello Santi will conduct a programme including overtures and choruses from operas by Giuseppe Verdi. The concert will feature famous choruses from Nabucco and Macbeth and the overtures from the operas Giovanna d’Arco, La battaglia di Legnano and I vespri siciliani.

The Mariinsky Theatre’s White Foyer will be hosting an exhibition dedicated to I pagliacci. For the Teatro di San Carlo’s tour, maestro Leoncavallo’s conducting baton, letters he wrote, the score of I pagliacci in several languages and other unique archive materials have been brought from Italy and will be on display.
