The Mariinsky online: Prokofiev

As the conclusion of a series of online broadcasts dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev, at 19.00 on 25 May mariinsky.tv will be presenting a recording of major opuses by the composer for chorus and orchestra from the cycle Absolute Prokofiev. The video will remain accessible for 24 hours on mariinsky.tv and via the social networking sites VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

This will be a broadcast of works inspired by pagan myths, as performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Valery Gegiev: Scythian Suite, created using musical materials from the ballet Ala and Lolli, and the cantata There Are Seven for tenor, mixed chorus and orchestra (the soloist is Igor Morozov of the Helikon Opera). The programme also includes the immense Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution to texts by Lenin, extracts from speeches by Stalin and works by Marx as well as one of the most popular scores in the cello repertoire – the Sinfonia Concertante for Cello (soloist – Alexander Ramm).

This online screening will form the final event in a series commemorating the birthday of Sergei Prokofiev. Since 23 April on mariinsky.tv more than twenty-five of his opuses have been presented: operas, ballets, symphonic works and instrumental concerti. Excluding theatre productions, all recordings broadcast this month were made in 2016 in St Petersburg and Moscow as part of the Prokofiev Marathon to mark 125 years since the composer's birth.
