The Mariinsky online: the orchestra of the Russo-German Academy of Music

On 15 May at 19.00 on mariinsky.tv there will be an online broadcast of a concert by a youth ensemble that unites talented musicians from Russia and Germany – the orchestra of the Russo-German Academy of Music. The conductor is Valery Gergiev. The broadcast will be available to view via the platform mariinsky.tv and on the social networking sites VKontakte and Odnoklassniki. The video will remain available for 24 hours.

This performance by the orchestra was recorded in June 2017 at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre during the Stars of the White Nights festival. For that occasion, the youth ensemble presented the Russian premiere of the orchestral piece Verwandlung 4 by contemporary German composer Wolfgang Rihm. The programme also included Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto, the solo being performed by the renowned German musician Frank Peter Zimmermann.

The Russo-German Academy of Music is a unique educational and creative project for rising stars of classical music. It was founded by young soloists of the Mariinsky Orchestra and trainees from leading symphony ensembles in Germany in 2012-2013 as a platform for orchestral and ensemble projects, practical lessons and master-classes given by acclaimed musicians. Preparations for each and every concert programme take place under the supervision of experienced teachers, and the Mariinsky Theatre was chosen as the Academy's main base. Valery Gergiev is the project's Artistic Director.
