On the day of Sergei Prokofiev's birth the Mariinsky Theatre is launching an online marathon of his works

On 23 April the Mariinsky Theatre is launching a major Prokofiev Marathon online. Over two weeks on mariinsky.tv and on the social networking sites VKontakte and Odnoklassniki there will be broadcasts of recordings of the composer's symphony and vocal-instrumental opuses, instrumental concerti, operas and ballets conducted by Valery Gergiev.

On 23 April at 19.00 the Prokofiev Marathon begins on mariinsky.tv with a recording of a performance by Leonidas Kavakos (violin), Denis Kozhukhin (piano) and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The performance includes the First (Classical) and Second Symphonies as well as Piano Concerto No 1 and Violin Concerto No 1.

This recording, like many others included in the online programme, was produced in April 2016 during an unprecedented marathon of works by Sergei Prokofiev marking 125 years since the birth of the composer. At that time, at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre more than thirty works were performed and recorded over two days. One result of these concerts was a unique collectors' edition released by Arthaus Musik together with Telmondis Distribution and the Mariinsky Theatre. Almost seven hundred minutes of music was recorded featuring leading performers from across the globe including Kristóf Baráti, Denis Matsuev, Daniil Trifonov, Vadym Kholodenko, Mariinsky Opera soloists and the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Valery Gergiev.
