Cinderella encore – Russian Seasons performed by the Mariinsky Theatre online

Continuing its internet broadcasts, the Mariinsky Theatre is joining a new online platform as part of the Russian Seasons international project. On 4 April at 20.00 by popular demand there will be a screening of the ballet Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev with Diana Vishneva, Vladimir Shklyarov and Ekaterina Konadaurova in the lead roles with Valery Gergiev conducting. The broadcast will be accessible to view via mariinsky.tv and on the platform Stay home with Russian Seasons for twenty-four hours.

The video recording of the ballet Cinderella, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, was made in June 2013, and in 2016 it was released on the Mariinsky label, receiving rave reviews in the press and nominations for the prestigious ICMA prize. Unlike many predecessors who staged this ballet, Ratmansky proffered an interpretation of Prokofiev's immense score, nut no plot of a well-known fairytale. He set his heroine in a timeless space, albeit with elements of the everyday, where miracles are achieved not by beautiful fairies, but by a shrewd old bag-lady with a sack of oranges and accompanied by a suite of bullying punks. The depth of Prokofiev's masterpiece, its notes of anxiety and alarm and love of life are brought together by Ratmansky together with Valery Gergiev, Ilya Utkin, Yevgeny Monakhov and Elena Markovskaya in postmodernist ease in an ironic ballet. He choreographed a ballet that audiences laugh at, while the dancers, submitting to the nature of the game, discover new facets of their souls and have fun.
