The Mariinsky online: a weekend of theatre to mark World Theatre Day

The Mariinsky Theatre has prepared a unique programme to mark World Theatre Day. Each day from 26 to 29 March mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting dazzling performances and glittering gala concerts: the grand opening of the Mariinsky-II featuring Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Diana Vishneva, Ulyana Lopatkina and many other stars, the oratorio Ivan the Terrible with Alexei Petrenko and the symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf with Konstantin Khabensky as the respective Narrators, a performance by Alexandre Kantorow accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev and the ballet Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse) with Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov.

On 26 March at 19.00 there will be a rare opportunity to hear immense vocal and symphony canvases by Sergei Prokofiev: the cantata Alexander Nevsky and the oratorio Ivan the Terrible for narrator, soloists, chorus and orchestra. This programme proved to be one of the most significant events at the Mariinsky Theatre commemorating one hundred and twenty-five years since the birth of the composer in April 2016 when it was also recorded. The role of the Narrator in the oratorio was performed by the acclaimed actor Alexei Petrenko, People's Artist of Russia, while the vocal roles in the works were sung by Olga Borodina (mezzo-soprano), Yulia Matochkina (mezzo-soprano) and Mikhail Petrenko (bass) with the Mariinsky Chorus and Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

On 27 March, World Theatre Day, mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting a recording of the Gala Concert marking the opening of the Mariinsky-II (the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre) in May 2013. The grand gala event featured world stars, among them the opera singers Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Plácido Domingo, Ildar Abdrazakov, Yevgeny Nikitin and René Pape, the ballerinas Diana Vishneva, Olga Yesina, Ekaterina Kondaurova and Ulyana Lopatkina, the instrumentalists Leonidas Kavakos (violin), Yuri Bashmet (viola) and Denis Matsuev (piano), as well as Mariinsky Opera and Ballet soloists and the Mariinsky Chorus, Children's Chorus and Orchestra. The stage director of this grandiose celebration was Vasily Barkhatov while the concert was designed by Zinovy Margolin. Valery Gergiev was the conductor.

Saturday morning will be time for family viewing. On 28 March at 12.00 mariinsky.tv will be screening a recording of Prokofiev's symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf, much loved by several generations of children and adults alike. The audience will be introduced to the plot and the various instruments of the orchestra by the acclaimed actor Konstantin Khabensky, while Valery Gergiev and the musicians of the Mariinsky Orchestra will be presenting the musical side of the plot. In the evening on mariinsky.tv there will be yet another innovation – a grand concert in honour of the start of the I International Moscow Festival Zaryadye. The programme is to include: Dawn over the Moskva River (introduction from the opera Khovanshchina) by Modest Musorgsky, Boléro by Maurice Ravel, Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz and Piano Concerto No 5 by Camille Saint-Saëns performed by Alexandre Kantorow, recipient of the Grand Prix, 1st prize and Gold Medal at the XVI Tchaikovsky Competition.

The theatre weekend will conclude with yet another family production. On 29 March at 12.00 there will be a staging of the vibrant ballet fairy tale Konyok-Gorbunok, which successfully combines a familiar plot that is engaging for children, its ironic interpretation that is interesting to adults, the extravagant and stylish designs by Maxim Isaev, the talented and inventive choreography of Alexei Ratmansky and the emotional music of Rodion Shchedrin. The lead roles in this recording, produced in 2013, are performed by Vladimir Shklyarov (Ivan the Fool), Alina Somova (the Tsar Maiden), Vladislav Shumakov (the Little Humpbacked Horse) and Islom Baimuradov (Gentleman of the Bedchamber). The conductor was Valery Gergiev.
