Valery Gergiev and soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre to perform at the Metropolitan Opera

On 2 March the Metropolitan Opera will be presenting a premiere of the 2019-20 season – Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer. The first six performances will be conducted by Valery Gergiev. The new production by François Girard, who staged Parsifal at the Met in 2013, is a co-production with the Dutch National Opera, the Opéra de Québec and the Abu Dhabi Festival.

Maestro Gergiev will be conducting a magnificent cast headed by Mariinsky Theatre singer Yevgeny Nikitin in one of his greatest roles – the Dutchman – and German soprano Anja Kampe, for whom the role of Senta will mark her debut at the Metropolitan Opera. The role of Daland will be performed by Franz-Josef Selig who has sung the role several times throughout the world, including at Bayreuth, with Mariinsky Theatre soloist Sergei Skorokhodov to appear as Erik.

Continuing the tour, Valery Gergiev will conduct a series of concerts featuring celebrated musicians in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and the USA. Joining the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at its home venue will be the renowned Hungarian violinist Kristóf Baráti, while in Santiago de los Caballeros and Santo Domingo the Mariinsky Orchestra will be joined by one of the most sought-after pianists in the world – Daniil Trifonov, as well as by Kristóf Baráti and Mariinsky Theatre vocalists Sergei Skorokhodov (tenor) and Vladislav Kupriyanov (baritone). Kristóf Baráti and Sergei Skorokhodov will depart with the Mariinsky Orchestra for Colombia, where they will take part in an evening performance at the Teatro Mayor (Bogotá).
Valery Gergiev will conduct the final concerts of the tour in the USA with major American ensembles: the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestras, to which the maestro suggested a Russian programme. In New York there will be a performance of works by Shchedrin, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky while Chicago will host a performance of Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony Leningrad.
