The Rarely Performed Mlada Helps Mark 175 Years Since the Birth of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Zaryadye Concert Hall

The Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow with host a performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely performed opera Mlada (concert version) by the Mariinsky Theatre soloists, the Mariinsky Chorus, and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev on 23 April. Main roles will be performed by leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and guest artists: Anastasia Schegoleva (Voyslava), Sergei Skorokhodov (Yaromir), Vadim Kravets (Mstivoy), Vladislav Kupriyanov (High Priest of Radegast), Yekaterina Sergeyeva (Lumir), and Anna Kiknadze (Morena). This event continues the Mariinsky Theatre’s extensive programme marking 175 years since the birth of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The magic opera-ballet Mlada based on a tale about ancient pagan West Slavs is one of the most complex ones out of all music works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. “I decided not to hold back and use an orchestral palette similar to Wagner’s in Der Ring des Nibelungen,” wrote the composer in Chronicle of My Musical Life. The opera is very rarely staged at theatres. Mlada was first staged at the Mariinsky Theatre during Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s lifetime, and then new productions came only in 1923 and 2004.

The Rimsky-Korsakov – 175 festival ran at the Mariinsky Theatre from 17 March to 12 April. The festival covered St Petersburg, Vladivostok, Vladikavkaz, and Moscow and included premieres of various productions, performances of all the composer’s fifteen operas, most of his romances, the famous Scheherazade ballet, as well as most of Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphony and choral works. Even after the festival, the Mariinsky Theatre continues to celebrate the musical legacy of the great Russian composer. Several events at the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow, the XVIII Moscow Easter Festival, and a number of events of the XXVII Stars of the White Nights festival in St Petersburg will all be dedicated to Rimsky-Korsakov.
