The results of the first stage of a competition to design a monument to Pyotr Tchaikovsky have been announced at the Concert Hall

On 23 December Vice-Governor of St Petersburg Nikolai Linchenko and Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev announced the names of five sculptors who have gone through to the second stage of an international competition to design a monument to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The winners of the first stage were:
– the creative group of Viktor Alexandrovich Gavrilov, Vitaly Viktorovich Chernyshev and Alesya Sergeyevna Tukach (work on No 250457);
– the creative group Yevgeny Valerievich Tuniy, Ruslan Mikhailovich Yegorov and Vasily Sergeyevich Potapov (work on No 198176);
– Anastasia Gennadievna Luzhina (work on No 456123);
– Yekaterina Leonidovna Pilnikova (work on No 134165);
– Nikolai Nikolaevich Antsiferov (work on No 765234).

The results of the second stage of the competition will be announced during celebrations marking one hundred and eighty years since the birth of Pyotr Tchaikovsky in 2020. It is planned to install the monument to the composer on the square in front of the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre.

Valery Gergiev particularly emphasised the significance of installing a monument to Tchaikovsky in St Petersburg. According to the maestro, the task of immortalising the name of the musician is incredibly important for the city with which the genius' destiny was so closely associated. Nikolai Linchenko noted that the place chosen is ideal for the monument: in the historic centre of St Petersburg, and within walking distance of the Conservatory and the Mariinsky Theatre, which will create "the finest setting of musical works" for the monument to this great composer.

In total, the competition featured more than ninety works by sculptors from St Petersburg, Moscow, Tomsk, Omsk, Volgograd, Saratov, Syktyvkar and other Russian cities as well as from Romania, Canada, Estonia, Latvia and Belarus.
