Ticket sales are open for events at the Mariinsky Theatre in January

Over the first days in January the Mariinsky Theatre’s playbill will be filled with performances and concerts imbued with the spirit of Christmas and New Year.

There will be performances of the operas A Christmas Tale by Rodion Shchedrin and Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, Christmas Tales theatrical concerts for the whole family and New Year programmes by the Renaissance Percussion ensemble and the Chizhik-Jazz-Quartet.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker will be presented in January in two versions – with choreography by Vasily Vainonen and also the production by Mihail Chemiakin.
Also to be staged in January will be premieres from the current theatre season and the 2018–19 season: Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

Classical works much loved by audiences are to include the operas The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Ruslan and Lyudmila by Mikhail Glinka, La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the ballets La Sylphide by Herman von Lovenskjøld, La Bayadère and Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake among other productions.

From 14 to 23 January the historic Mariinsky Theatre and the Mariinsky-II will host a traditional tour by the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The company will be presenting its versions of the classical ballets The Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire and Giselle.
