Valery Gergiev to Perform with German and Dutch Orchestras

This December Valery Gergiev will have a series of concerts with leading European ensembles, namely the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

From 7 December to 9 December, Valery Gergiev will give three concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker at one of the most famous concert halls in the world – the Berlin Philharmonie. The programme focuses on works by Russian composers. To be performed are the suite from Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella, the suite from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, as well as Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. A month later, on 7 January, Valery Gergiev will once again appear at the Berlin Philharmonie as the Mariinsky Opera soloists, the Mariinsky Chorus, and the Mariinsky Orchestra are set to perform Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta at the gala opening of the international cultural project Russian Seasons in Germany.

On 14 December, 15 December, and 16 December, Valery Gergiev will conduct the Munich Philharmonic for a traditional series of concerts at the Philharmonie of the Gasteig (Munich). The mono programme, dedicated to Gustav Mahler, includes the composer’s Symphony No. 4 and Das Lied von der Erde. The vocals will be provided by Anna Lucia Richter (soprano), Tanja Ariane Baumgartner (mezzo-soprano), and Andreas Schager (tenor). The next series of performances by Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic is scheduled for January 2019.

Two soirée performances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will mark Valery Gergiev’s last performances with foreign ensembles in 2018. On 19 December and 20 December, the famous Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam will host a performance of Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto and music from Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé featuring the Chorus of Dutch National Opera. Featured soloist is renowned Dutch violinist Janine Jansen, who plays a unique instrument – 1707 Antonio Stradivari 'Rivaz, Baron Gutmann' violin.

On 10 December and 11 December, Valery Gergiev will also perform with the Mariinsky ensemble in Rimini (Italy). The Teatro Amintore Galli, which recently reopened its doors after 75 years, will host performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra staged by Andrea De Rosa.
