Marking 200 years since the birth of Marius Petipa with the tour of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg

The historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will host summer performances of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre ballet company from 31 July to 12 August. These on tour summer performances in St Petersburg have already become a tradition. The international ensemble of the Far East branch of the Mariinsky Theatre will bring its own versions of such classical productions as Giselle, Le Corsaire, and The Sleeping Beauty. The productions are based on the original choreography by the ballet master Marius Petipa, to whom the Mariinsky Theatre has dedicated many projects in 2018.

On 31 July, the tour will open with a performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and revised by Konstantin Sergeev (1952) and Eldar Aliev (2017). The Sleeping Beauty premiere in May 2017 was prepared by the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre together with Tani Momoko Ballet (Japan), which provided stage decorations and costumes, as well as sent its soloists to take part in one of the premiere performances. St Petersburg audiences will have an opportunity to enjoy the ballet on 1 August, 2 August, and 11 August, as well as on 12 August, at the closing of the 235th season of the Mariinsky Theatre.

Apart from The Sleeping Beauty, the St Petersburg theatre-goers will have another chance to see the ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, which were included into the tour programme of the Primorsky Stage in St Petersburg in January 2018. The performances of Adolphe Adam’s fantasy ballet Giselle choreographed by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot, and Marius Petipa will take place on 3 August, 4 August, and 5 August. The colourful Adolphe Adam’s ballet Le Corsaire with the music by Cesare Pugni, Léo Delibes, Riccardo Drigo, and Pyotr Oldenburgsky and staged by Eldar Aliev, the head ballet master of the Mariinsky Theatre (using fragments of Marius Petipa’s choreography) will be performed on 7 August, 8 August, 9 August, and 10 August. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Pavel Smelkov and Anton Torbeev.

A quick reminder: to mark 200 years since the birth of the great ballet master, an online exhibition Petipa at the Mariinsky Theatre was opened on the Mariinsky Theatre website. The exhibition will help you to learn more about the creation of legendary ballets, which are now a part of the gold fund of classical ballet. The Mariinsky Theatre repertoire includes nine such ballets. The exhibition is based on the materials of the Mariinsky Theatre Archive and a collection of sketches of the St. Petersburg State Theatre Library. It shows how Petipa’s works have been transformed on their home stage and what changes have been made over time to Petipa’s choreographic masterpieces.
