The premiere of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s opera Aleko (concert performance), marking 145 years since the birth of the composer, will be hosted by the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (the Mariinsky Theatre’s branch in Vladikavkaz) on 4 April. The lead roles will be performed by Gevorg Grigoryan (National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania), Gelena Gaskarova (the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers) and Savva Khastaev (the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers). Aleko is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s graduation work at the Moscow Conservatory, which has won him the gold medal that year. The opera’s music is full of sincere musical expression and vivid drama; it conveys deep sentiments and well-developed characters. The greatest Russian artistes have taken part in the performances of the opera, with Fyodor Chaliapin on top of the list of title roles performers.

During its first season as the Mariinsky Theatre branch, the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania presented five premieres: Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (staged by Alexei Stepanyuk), Tango Without You ballet to the music of Astor Piazzolla (choreographed by Ilya Ustyantsev), three operas for children by Sergei Banevich (The Brave Hare, Murych the Cat, The Snow Queen, directed by Givi Valiev). The theatre has also revived Georg Friedrich Händel’s opera Agrippina (directed by Sofia Sirakanian) and Giacomo Puccini’s Manon Lescaut (directed by Alexander Maskalin).
