Marking Sergei Vikulov's 80th birthday

On 26 November the performance of the ballet Giselle will be dedicated to Sergei Vikulov, a Mariinsky Theatre ballet-master and coach.

Sergei Vikulov soared over the Kirov Stage from the 1950s to the 1980s. His impressive leap enchanted not just the audiences who witnessed it. The dancer's skill was highly praised by the jury of the Varna Competition, which awarded him its Gold Medal in 1964. In 1965 the dancer was presented with the prestigious International Vaslav Nijinsky Prize.

Sergei Vikulov's individuality was clear to see in lyrical roles. His repertoire included all the classical princes – Albrecht, Siegfried, Désiré, Solor and Jean de Brienne as well as romantic heroes in 20th century productions – Vaslav in The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and the Prince in Cinderella. Vikulov was named the most romantic dancer of his generation, a tenor of Soviet ballet.

Today Sergei Vikulov is passing on his experience to younger dancers, sharing with them the secrets of the trade and the stylistic subtleties of productions in which he himself once shone.
