Born in Petrozavodsk.
Graduated from the Vaganova School of Ballet in Leningrad in 1956 (class of Feya Balabina). From 1956-1990 he performed at Leningrad’s Kirov Theatre of Opera and Ballet and was the first performer of roles in productions of The Red Poppy (Wang Lee Chen), Waltzes by Ravel (Second and Seventh Waltzes), Spanish Miniatures (Torero), Les Patineurs (Skater), Lefty (Nicholas) and the piece Valse-Fantasie to music by Mikhail Glinka and with choreography by Yuri Grigorovich. The dancer’s repertoire featured some two dozen roles in various ballets including Swan Lake (Siegfried, von Rothbart), The Sleeping Beauty (Désiré, Catabalutte), La Bayadère (the High Brahmin), The Fountain of Bakhchisarai (Vaslav, Ghirei), Romeo and Juliet (Paris, Tybalt), Raymonda (Abderakhman), Giselle (Hans), The Legend of Love (the Vizier), The Path of Thunder (Mako), Shore of Hope (Man in Black), Choreographic Miniatures (The Dream, The Bird and the Hunter, The Blind Girl), Hamlet (Claudius), Laurencia (Commander), Spartacus (Crassus, Crassus’ Freedman), The Bedbug (Bayan) and Carnaval (Florestan).

He appeared in the ballet film The Sleeping Beauty (Groom) and the TV film Choreographic Miniatures (Skater). Took part in concerts by the Chamber Ballet directed by Georgy Alexidze. During his career as a performer he worked with such choreographers as Konstantin Sergeyev, Yuri Grigorovich, Leonid Yakobson, Vakhtang Chabukiani and Roland Petit. As an Assistant Choreographer he has collaborated with Maurice Béjart, Jerome Robbins, Roland Petit and Pierre Lacotte.

Since 1963 he has taught at the Vaganova Ballet Academy, where he was appointed Professor in 2002. His pupils have included Farukh Ruzimatov, Radjepmyrat Abdyev, Valentin Yelizarev, Salmurbek Stanov, Vasily Medvedev, Sergei Kozadaev, Igor Petrov, Kirill Melnikov, Denis Firsov, Vyacheslav Samodurov, Dmitry Pykhachev, Denis Tolmachev, Esio Homura, Sergei Popov, Emil Faski, Alexander Sergeyev, Andrei Kasianenko, Alexei Timofeyev, Ilya Petrov and Ernest Latypov as well as students of the Hungarian group (György Sakai and Ene Lecen) and the Bulgarian group (Biser Todorov, Alexander Alexandrov and Rumen Rachev).

Since 1991 he has worked as a ballet master and coach with artistes of the Mariinsky Ballet. He has rehearsed roles with Farukh Ruzimatov, Igor Zelensky, Konstantin Zaklinsky, Makhar Vaziev, Yulia Makhalina, Igor Petrov, Dmitry Korneyev, Andris Liepa, Alexander Kurkov, Biktor Baranov, Andrei Yakovlev (2nd), Leonid Sarafanov and Andrei Yakovlev (2nd), Igor Kolb, Leonid Sarafanov, Andrei Yakovlev, Ernest Latypov, Danila Korsuntsev, Yevgeny Ivanchenko, Andrei Yermakov and Viktor Caixeta.

He died on 29 October 2020.
