Zenon Zalitsailo


Cello

Born in Lvov in 1951. Graduated from the Kiev Conservatory (1975, class of Marina Tchaikovskaya), and as a student he became a prize-winner at the Republic of Ukraine Cello Competition and a diploma-recipient at the V International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1974).

Began his career as a soloist with the Lvov Philharmonic, subsequently appearing with the Kiev Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1980 he joined the orchestra of the Leningrad Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre (the Mariinsky Theatre) as deputy leader of the cello section, becoming leader in 1991.

Together with the orchestra, he has performed all of the Mariinsky Theatre's repertoire for opera, ballet and symphony music, in addition to featuring in numerous tours throughout Russia and abroad and in concerts and performances conducted by Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Yevgeny Svetlanov, Mariss Jansons, Paavo Järvi, Mstislav Rostropovich and Plácido Domingo.

In 2000 he was awarded the title "Honoured Artist of Russia" and in 2007 he received the medal of the order "For Services to the Fatherland", 2nd class.
