Larisa Gogolevskaya

The theatre as a singer of the role of Elektra who quite simply masters this feat from beginning to end (despite the fact that the opera is short and is performed without an interval. It is Larisa Gogolevskaya, the renowned Isolde in Dmitry Chernyakov’s Tristan, the stunning Stepmother in the recent Jenůfa here. Elektra quite simply proved to be her gala performance. And, of course, it is not just the strength, timbre and staying power of her voice, but also her amazing gift for tragedy thanks to which the mere presence alone of this bold and essentially anti-glamorous singer on stage electrifies everything around her.

In the Mariinsky Theatre’s extensive Wagnerian repertoire, Larisa Gogolevskaya sings all the powerful roles, but we have never seen her like this before. She appeared as a stylish and aristocratic European woman in whom the inner strength, forged by her steely intellect, burns with an icy flame. She truly resembles Bergman’s Nordic heroines.
