Marjukka Tepponen


Soprano

Born into a musically gifted family, Marjukka Tepponen began her musical education as a pianist at the age of five. In 2000 she enrolled in vocal studies at the Conservatory in Kuopio and from 2003 onwards attended the University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä. Afterwards she completed her studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Marjut Hannula and in Vienna under Hilde Zadek.

A winner of several prestigious singing competitions, Marjukka Tepponen has been a finalist at the International Mirjam Helin Competition in Helsinki (2009) and was awarded the 1st prize at the National Lappeenranta Singing Competition in January 2010.

Marjukka Tepponen is a regular guest at the Finnish National Opera, where in the past she has performed such roles as Frasquita (Carmen), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Julietta (Die tote Stadt), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) and Corinna (Il viaggio a Reims). She has also made her debuts as Violetta (La traviata) at the Jyväskylä Opera and as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at the Tampere Opera.

During the 2010-2011 season, Marjukka Tepponen made a remarkably successful debut as Mimì (La Bohème) in Graz. In 2011 she sang as Zerlina in a new production of Don Giovanni at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, to which she returned in 2012 as both the Voice of the High Priestess (Aida) and as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte).

Highlights of recent seasons have included her debut as the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro) in Turku (Finland), a new production of Le nozze di Figaro (as Susanna) at the Tampere Opera, Mimì (La Bohème) in Helsinki, her debut as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) in Rijeka (Croatia) and concert engagements in Munich in Sounds of Cinema with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester and Verdi’s Requiem with the Münchner Symphoniker. Furthermore, she released her first aria album (works by Mozart, bel canto and French repertoire) with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.

A highlight of the current season was without doubt the world premiere of Indigo (title role), an opera by Perttu Kivilaakso and Eicca Toppinen at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, for which Marjukka Tepponen received excellent reviews. She returned in summer 2016 as Liù (Turandot) at the Bregenz Festspiele, where she had made her debut in a new production in the summer of 2015 under the baton of Paolo Carignani. Marjukka Tepponen will record two new albums this year with Decca – Faust (as Marguerite) and Il ritorno del marinaio (as Jela) by Franz von Suppé.

Future engagements include the roles of Liù (Turandot) at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) at both the Seattle Opera and the Finnish National Opera.

Marjukka Tepponen has performed as a soloist with several Finnish orchestras and in solo recitals with Marita Viitasalo.
