Thomas Quasthoff

Baritone

For almost four decades German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff set the standard on international stages before ending his outstanding career as a classical singer in 2012. He remains busy, however, as a teacher at Berlin’s Hanns Eisler Music Academy, as a recitalist and speaker at concerts, readings, and with his jazz-projects.

A frequent guest of the leading orchestras such as the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic at all major venues, he worked closely with conductors including Barenboim, Levine, Haitink, Jansons, Mehta, Muti, Ozawa, Rattle, Rilling and Thielemann. His CDs received many awards, including three Grammys. Having dedicated himself to Lied for many years, he founded the International Song Competition Das Lied in 2009. Always enjoying new challenges, he turned towards jazz with some internationally renowned instrumentalists: Frank Chastenier (piano), Dieter Ilg (double bass) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums). Highly acclaimed in Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, Cologne, Essen and Hamburg further concerts of the quartet are foreseen at the Jazz-Fest Wien, Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival and Verbier Festival, in Madrid, Frankfurt, Hildesheim, Weimar, Graz, Paris and Madrid.

Thomas Quasthoff received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Culture Prize for Music, the Gold Medal of London’s Royal Philharmonic Society, the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize, and the Gold Medal of Wigmore Hall London. In 2009, he was conferred the title of “Österreichischer Kammersänger”.
