Marcelo Alvarez

Marcelo Alvarez is internationally recognized as one of the most important tenors of this era and has been acclaimed at virtually all the great opera houses of the world. After debuting in Europe with the Teatro La Fenice in La Sonnambula in 1995, Alvarez established his international reputation in lyric roles such as Werther, Romeo, Faust, Edgardo in Lucia, Alfredo in La traviata, the Duca in Rigoletto and Rodolfo in La Boheme. In 2005 Alvarez sang his first Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; in 2006 he debuted as Cavaradossi in Tosca, also at Covent Garden, as well as Manrico in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Regio in Parma. He sang his first Don Jose in Carmen in Toulouse in 2007, Maurzio in Adriana Lecouvreur in Turin in 2009. That year also included his debut in the title role in Andrea Chenier in Paris, followed by his first Radames in Aida, again for the Royal Opera, later repeating the role at the Metropolitan Opera.
During the 2012/2013 season, Alvarez returned to the Metropolitan Opera to star in the new production of Un Ballo in Maschera and also starred in La Scala’s production of Ballo. After appearing as Andrea Chenier in Torino, he added another new role to his repertoire, singing as Enzo Grimaldo in the Paris Opera’s new production of Ponchielli’s La Gioconda. Engagements for the 2013/2014 season included his return to the Opera National de Paris as Radamés in Aida, and then returning to the Teatro alla Scala as Manrico in Il trovatore, and then the title role in Andrea Chénier at the Metropolitan Opera amongst others. Engagements for the 2014/2015 season include a return to the Opera Bastille in Tosca, as well as a return to the Metropolitan Opera in Cavelleria rusticana and Pagliacci.
In the fall of 2011 he returned to Paris for his first Don Alvaro in La forza del destino. He has since received the highest praise for his performances of this repertoire, appearing also as Manrico at the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Zurich Opera, Arena di Verona; as Cavardossi at the Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Torino and Parma. His Jose has been applauded in London, Florence, Valencia, Rome, Tokyo and Zurich. He also sang Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012. A regular guest at the Arena di Verona, he has performed almost his entire repertoire there.
Born in Cordoba, Argentina Alvarez first began to study classical music when already in his twenties and established as a successful businessman. Making the decision to pursue a career in opera, Alvarez sold his business, left Argentina and arrived in Italy in 1995. Within a month of his arrival in Europe, his calendar was already filled with offers for the next two years and within that short span of time, rose to international prominence. He sang his first performances of the Duke in Rigoletto at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste and made his French stage debut in Toulouse in June of 1997 and Arena di Verona Debut in August 1997 in the same role. Alvarez was also heard as Alfredo in La traviata at the Hamburg State Opera, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and made his Spanish debut as Tonio in La fille du regiment in Bilbao. In the spring of 1997 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Alvarez sang his first performances of the title role of Massenet’s Werther, at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and made his debut as Arturo in I puritani at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna to tumultuous acclaim. The 1997/98 season was set with several significant debuts; Rigoletto in Buenos Aires, Werther in Brussels, Linda di Chamounix at the Teatro Alla Scala, as well as with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in London, Falstaff at the Berlin State Opera, in a new production conducted by Claudio Abbado. Alvarez made his first appearances with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden (in Baden Baden and at the Royal Albert Hall), Vienna State Opera, and Paris Opera in La traviata. He made his North American debut in November of 1998 in the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of the work conducted by James Levine and directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starred in two other new stagings at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Florence. Alvarez made his actual Covent Garden debut in first Hoffmann in 2000 and that same year debuted at the Bavarian State Oper in Munich in a new production of Faust, both marking his debuts in the roles.
