• Prize-winner at the Paris Opera Competition (2014; 3rd prize)

Maria Kataeva was born in Novokuznetsk (Kemerovo Region). In 2012 she graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory. From 2011 to 2013 she trained at the Opera Studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf – Duisburg), and in the 2013–14 season was a member of that theatre’s opera company, performing the roles of the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Angelina (La Cenerentola), Elisabetta (Maria Stuarda), Ruggiero (Handel’s Alcina), Rosina (Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia), Nicklausse and the Muse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Wellgunde (Das Rheingold), the Child (Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges) and Carmen.

Appears at the Semperoper Dresden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra national de Paris, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, the Vlaamse Opera (Flemish Opera) in Ghent and Antwerp, the Edmonton Opera in Canada and the Theater Aachen. She took part in gala concerts by Plácido Domingo at Crocus City Hall in Moscow (October 2019) and at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (March 2021).

Repertoire also includes the roles of Dido (Dido and Aeneas), Orfeo (Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice), Idamante (Idomeneo, rè di Creta), the Marquise Melibea (Il viaggio a Reims), Dorabella (Così fan tutte).
