Puerto Rican tenor Rafael Dávila recent engagements include important debuts, as Don José in Carmen with the Metropolitan Opera, the Chevalier des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut for San Francisco Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, as well as the premiere of the opera Bel Canto by Jimmy López for Lyric Opera of Chicago. Other important engagements include the operas Norma, La forza del destino, Carmen and Don Carlo for Washington National Opera, Un ballo in maschera for the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples and Florida Grand Opera in Miami, as well as Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci for the Teatro di San Carlo and the Macerata Opera Festival in Italy.

His iconic role of Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca has been heard in Leipzig, San Juan (Puerto Rico) as well as in Sarasota, Miami, Kansas City, Minnesota, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Tucson. His Don José has also been heard in Naples, New Orleans, Miami, Kansas City, St Paul, Palm Beach and in New Zealand. His operatic repertoire also includes the operas Otello by Verdi, Aida, La fanciulla del West, Turandot, Luisa Miller, Il trovatore, Giovanna d’Arco, La Wally, La traviata, Attila, Madama Butterfly, I Lombardi alla prima crociata and Lucia di Lammermoor. His concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Berlioz’ Te Deum, Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem.

In the lighter repertoire, Rafael has participated in the Spanish zarzuelas Luisa Fernanda, Los gavilanes, Marina and El huésped del Sevillano, the Cuban zarzuelas María la O and Cecilia Valdés, the Venezuelan zarzuela Alma llanera, the operettas Die Fledermaus and Die lustige Witwe.

Rafael began his studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, later completing a master’s degree in opera performance at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been nominated twice for the Latin GRAMMY Awards for the recordings of Ariel Ramírez’ Misa Criolla and Rafael Hernández’ operetta Cofresí.
