Mezzo-soprano

Liuba Sokolova was born in Chelyabinsk. In 1993 she graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Nina Serval), completing a postgraduate study there in 1995 (under the supervision of Anatoly Kiselyov).
Mariinsky Theatre soloist since 1993.

Her repertoire includes roles in Russian and European classical opuses, among them the Countess in The Queen of Spades (Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, Latvian National Opera, Theater St. Gallen (Switzerland)), Olga, Larina and Filippievna in Eugene Onegin (Welsh National Opera, Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, Oper Leipzig, Bregenz Festival (Austria), stand-in at the Metropolitan Opera), Azucena in Il trovatore, the Deaconess in Król Roger and the mezzo-soprano role in Britten’s Spring Symphony (Bregenz Festival), Amneris in Aida (Royal Albert Hall (London), Latvian National Opera, Bregenz Festival), Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera (Theater St. Gallen), Erda in Das Rheingold and Siegfried, Waltraute and the First Norn in Götterdämmerung (Aalto Theater in Essen (Germany), Latvian National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre of Russia), Charlotte in Werther (Lisbon), Bronka in Weinberg’s The Passenger (Bregenz Festival, Detroit Opera House, Chicago Lyric Opera), Babulenka in The Gambler (Vienna State Opera), Clytemnestra in Taneyev’s Oresteia (Richard B. Fischer Center for the Performing Arts (USA)), Marfa in Khovanshchina (Santiago), the Mistress of the Inn in Boris Godunov and the mezzo-soprano roles in Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, Prokofiev’s cantata Alexander Nevsky and Britten’s Stabat Mater among other works.

Has appeared with the Mariinsky Opera in Germany, Finland, Portugal, France, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Israel, China, Japan, Italy, the USA (Washington, New York and Los Angeles) and South America.

The singer’s discography includes recordings of the operas Salome, Ivan the Terrible and The Tsar’s Bride (Philips Classics), as well as Tchaikovsky’s cantata Moscow, twelve Russian folk songs arranged by Prokofiev and romances by Shostakovich to verse by Akhmatova.

In 2021 in London she will be performing the role of Vlasievna in The Maid of Pskov (with the prologue The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga), staged by David Pountney.
