Yevgeny Ganzburg

Yevgeny Ganzburg was born in Leningrad in 1962. In 1984 he graduated from the Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute, having specialised in physics and astronomy. In the 1970s at the Leningrad Theatre of Youth Creativity he trained under lighting designers Vasily Bulygin, Yevsei Kutikov and Boris Sinyachevsky.

Starting in the early 1980s, he has created the lighting designs for more than three hundred productions at drama, musical and puppet theatres in Russia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Latvia. Has collaborated with the stage directors Yuri Alexandrov, Jean-Guillaume Bart, Alexander Bargman, Radion Bukaev, Yury Butusov, Georgy Vasiliev, Galina Volchek, Vyacheslav Gvozdkov, Kama Ginkas, Marina Glukhovskaya, Vladimir Gurfinkel, Alessandra Giuntini, Grigory Dityatkovsky, Dmitry Yegorov, Galina Zhdanova, Vladimir Zolotar, Georgy Isaakyan, Tatiana Kazakova, Konstantin Keikhel, Yuri Kordonsky, Viktor Kramer, Alexei Kriklivy, Mikhail Levitin, Andrey Moguchy, Yury Muravitsky, Elena Nevezhina, Elmo Nüganen, Anton Pimonov, Anatoly Praudin, Andrey Prikotenko, Sergey Puskepalis, Kirill Simonov, Mikhail Skomorokhov, Alexander Slavutsky, Semyon Spivak, Yevgeny Ugryumov, Veniamin Filshtinsky, Georgy Tsnobiladze, Georgy Tskhvirava, Dmitry Chernyakov and Genrietta Yanovskaya among others. Since 2015 he has taught production lighting design technology at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts (senior lecturer of the Department of Theatre Technics and Technology). Runs the course for stage lighting managers at Show Consulting School (St Petersburg).

On five occasions he has been nominated for Russia’s Golden Mask National Theatre Award: in 2009 (The Enchanted Wanderer at the Mariinsky Theatre; composer Rodion Shchedrin and stage director Alexei Stepanyuk), in 2012 (August: Osage County at the Omsk Drama Theatre; stage director Andrzej Buben), in 2014 (One Summer’s Day at the Galiaskar Kamal Tatar Academic Theatre; stage director Farid Bikchantayev), in 2017 (Uncle Vanya at the Voronezh Chamber Theatre; stage director Mikhail Bychkov) and in 2018 (King Lear at the Novokuybyshevsk Theatre Studio “Gran”; stage director Denis Bokuradze). In 2010 for the lighting design of Masquerade the Novosibirsk “Red Torch” Theatre (stage director Timofey Kulyabin) was awarded the special prize of the New-Siberian Transit festival and competition. In 2018 he received an award from the Volga Theatre Seasons festival for his lighting design for The Overcoat at the Chelyabinsk Naum Orlov Drama Theatre (stage director Denis Khusniyarov). On three occasions he has been nominated for St Petersburg’s most notable theatre award, the Golden Sofit, receiving it in 2020 for the lighting design of the production 872 Days. Voices of the Blockade City by the “Subbota” Theatre (stage director Tatiana Voronina).

At the Mariinsky Theatre Yevgeny Ganzburg has created lighting designs for the operas Attila (stage director Arturo Gama), Die Zauberflöte (stage director Alain Maratrat), Le nozze di Figaro (stage director Alexander Petrov), The Enchanted Wanderer, Il barbiere di Siviglia, The Story of Kai and Gerda, The Idiot and Die Fledermaus (stage director Alexei Stepanyuk).
