Zhang Guoyong


Conductor

Zhang Guoyong studied conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1993 he was sponsored by the Chinese government and went to study at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Later he obtained his PhD from the conservatory. He is now a professor and the dean of conducting department at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the principle conductor of the Shanghai Opera House, the music director of the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra and the vice chairman of Shanghai Musicians Association and the China Musicians Association.

In 2006 he was a jury member at the Cadaques International Conducting Competition in Spain. Having a large repertoire including symphony, opera, ballet and choral music he is expert in Russian works, especially Shostakovich’s symphonies. In recent years he was invited as a national representative to take part in those important international events, such as the gala concert of the Sino-American Culture Year, Sino-French Culture Year, Sino-German Culture Year, Sino-Russian Culture Year, Sino-Latin America Culture Year etc. In 2014 he conducted the National Centre for the Performing Arts’ opera films Carmen and Rickshaw Boy. In the next year, he was invited to join the National Centre for the Performing Arts’s tour to Italy.
