Jean-Christophe Spinosi was born in 1964 in Corsica. Has trained in violin, conducting and ensemble performance. In 1991 he founded the Matheus Quartet, which became a chamber ensemble in 1996.
He is one of the leaders in historically informed performance. Conducts operas by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Rossini and Bizet at theatres in Paris and Vienna among other cities in Europe. Appears at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus in Dortmund, BOZAR in Brussels, Carnegie Hall in New York and the Smetana Hall in Prague. Performs chamber music with soloists including Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Natalie Dessay, Verónica Cangemi, Sara Mingardo, Jennifer Larmore, Simone Kermes, Nathalie Stutzmann, Lorenzo Regazzo and Matthias Goerne.
Has recorded the album Heroes featuring arias from operas by Vivaldi (with Philippe Jaroussky, 2008) and the album Mirrors featuring works by Bach, Shostakovich, Barber and Bacri (with Malena Ernman, 2014). Has worked on productions of the operas Le Comte Ory in Vienna and Zurich, Otello in Paris and L’italiana in Algeri, La Cenerentola and Otello at the Salzburg Festival with Cecilia Bartoli and the Matheus Ensemble. Has appeared with the Deutsche Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Wiener and Hamburg Staatsoper Orchestras, the orchestras of Berlin, Frankfurt and Vienna Radio, Norddeutsche Rundfunk, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Has collaborated with acclaimed stage directors and designers, among them Pierrick Sorin (Rossini’s La pietra del paragone, 2007, Théâtre du Châtelet), Oleg Kulik (Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, 2009, Théâtre du Châtelet), Claus Guth (Handel’s The Messiah, 2009, Theater an der Wien), Kamel Ouali (Haydn’s Orlando paladino, 2012, Théâtre du Châtelet), Damiano Michieletto (Rossini’s La Cenerentola, 2014, Salzburg Festival) and Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser (Rossini’s Otello and L’italiana in Algeri, Salzburg Festival, 2014 and 2018).
He was the first person ever to record a series of works by Vivaldi. These include the operas La verita in cimento (2003), Orlando furioso (2004), Griselda (2006) and La fida ninfa (2007), recorded on the Naïve label. Spinosi’s recordings have been awarded numerous prizes, including a BBC Music Magazine prize, Diapason d'Or prizes, Choc de l'année from Le Monde de la musique magazine, the Grand Prix from the Académie Charles Cros, the International Antonio Vivalsi Prize for a CD recording and the Prix Caecilia (Belgium).
On several occasions he has conducted the State Chamber Orchestra of Russia (2016, 2017) and the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra (2019).
Recent engagements include performances with the ensemble Les Violons du Roy and Marie-Nicole Lemieux, a concert performance of Bizet’s Carmen (together with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León) and a production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Swedish Royal Opera. In the 2018–2019 season he conducted performances of Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola at the Wiener Staatsoper and appeared with the Deutsche Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo.
