He graduated with distinction from both Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music. Since then, he has worked as an assistant with such conductors as Simone Young, Thomas Adès, Daniel Harding, Matthias Pintsher and Richard Baker, and collaborated with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Zurich Opera House, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Grand Theatre in Warsaw and Korea National Opera.
During the 2018-2019 season, he performed for the first time on the concert platform with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, to name but a few.
As Music Director of Shadwell Opera, he collaborates with the UK’s finest young singers and instrumentalists, bringing productions of seminal twentieth-century and contemporary works to new audiences. His performances with the company of works by Benjamin, Maxwell Davies, Turnage, Schoenberg and Stravinsky have received worldwide acclaim.
In 2017, Finnegan Downie Dear was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
