Vasily Popov was born in Leningrad. In 2011 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a pianist (class of Ekaterina Murina). Since 2010 Vasily Popov has been an accompanist of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers.
With the Academy soloists he has prepared the performances of La sonnambula, La traviata, Les Pêcheurs de perles, Ariadne auf Naxos, Eugene Onegin, Into the Storm, Colas Breugnon, The Idiot, The Captain's Daughter, The Cossacks and others.
Vasily Popov regularly appears in the theatre’s chamber halls accompanying soloists in concert programmes and chamber operas. His repertoire includes The Christmas Tree by Rebikov, Maddalena and The Giant by Prokofiev, Orango by Shostakovich, The Little Sweep by Britten, White Nights by Butsko, and The Waiting by Tariverdiev. The musician has also participated in the premieres of An Opera about Porridge, a Cat and Milk and Scenes from the Life of Nikolenka Irtenev by Banevich, Anna, Zinaida and The Little Prince by Klinichev.
As part of the Mussorgsky jubilee year in 2014/2015 season, he accompanied the Academy soloists in a series of chamber concerts performing all the vocal pieces by the composer.
In 2017 he appeared with Olga Borodina in her solo concert at Stars of the White Nights festival.
Vasily Popov has won a diploma as Best accompanist at the 15th, International Tchaikovsky Competition (among accompanists in the Voice category), as well as at All-Russian Nadezhda Obukhova Young Vocalists Competition in Lipetsk (2012, 2016) and the International Rimsky-Korsakov Competition in Tikhvin (2015). He has also appeared in concerts and festivals in Finland, Italy, England, Austria.
