The idea of establishing a Russo-German Academy of Music emerged during preparations for the opening concert of the Year of Germany in Russia (June 2012, Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire). Especially for that concert the Russo-German Student Orchestra was formed, including students of the Moscow Conservatoire and Berlin’s Universität der Künste.
The success inspired the young musicians to turn to project producer Tatjana Rexroth with the proposal of performing concerts together in future, united in chamber ensembles.
Since September 2013 Valery Gergiev has been the project’s Artistic Director, and its Executive Director has been has been Tatjana Rexroth. The projects are managed by RCCR-GmbH Berlin.
The principal activities of the academy are master-classes with leading musicians from both countries for members of the Russo-German Youth Orchestra and performing rarely-heard and recently written works by Russian and German composers. In 2014 the academy performed concerts during the Stars of the White Nights festival. The musicians regularly appear in St Petersburg, Berlin, Moscow, Bonn and Klin.
The academy is principally based at the Mariinsky Theatre.
