The Wiener Philharmoniker may justifiably be called one of the world’s greatest ensembles. Founded in 1842, the ensemble is the oldest symphony orchestra in Europe. The orchestra’s tours are planned five years in advance. Another unique characteristic of the orchestra is that it has no permanent Director or Principal Conductor. Over the years the Wiener Philharmoniker has been led by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Karl Böhm, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Georg Solti, Valery Gergiev, Claudio Abbado, Hans Richter and Christian Thielemann.
The right to appear in the orchestra is given to the most talented candidates who have had three years’ training at the Wiener Staatsoper.
The orchestra performs an annual New Years’ concert which is broadcast on TV in seventy-two countries. Since 1989 gold coins have been issued in honour of the orchestra, acclaimed by the World Gold Council as the most-sold gold coins in the world.
The Wiener Philharmoniker has a rich and diverse repertoire that includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Wagner and Strauss.
