Prize-winners receive the Golden Sofit

Valery Gergiev, Anna Netrebko, Alexei Markov and the production team for Gogoliade have won the Golden Sofit theatre prize.

The awards ceremony for the Golden Sofit, St Petersburg’s most prestigious theatre prize, takes place every autumn at the opening of the new theatre season and sums up the previous theatre year. This ceremony was the fifteenth to be held.

The theatre’s electrifying prima donna Anna Netrebko received an award for the role of Lucia in John Doyle’s production of Lucia di Lammermoor, which was premiered on 14 January 2009.

Charismatic young baritone Alexei Markov won the award for his rendition of the role of Robert in Mariusz Treliński’s production of the opera Iolanta. This summer, the premiere of Iolanta took place at the Baden-Baden Festspiele and received tremendous accolades from the critics. Alexei Markov’s powerful and commanding baritone voice received particular praise from the German press.

Production Designer Oleg Golovko received the award for his set designs for the opera The Lawsuit, directed by Anton Kovalenko, while Costume Designer Maria Lukka won for her designs for Shponka and His Aunt, directed by Alyona Anokhina. Both one-act operas form part of the production Gogoliade.

Gogoliade is one of the theatre’s unique new projects. The production consists of three one-act operas: Svetlana Nesterova’s The Lawsuit, Anastasia Bespalova’s Shponka and His Aunt and Vyacheslav Kruglik’s The Carriage. These operas were written by young composers for a closed competition in 2005. When writing the works, in line with conditions for the competition, the composers had to use a chamber orchestra and had to make do without a chorus, using the minimum possible number of soloists. Stage Directors of the production Anton Kovalenko, Alyona Anokhina and Maxim Kalsin were awarded the Golden Sofit Expert Council’s Special Prize for the development of intellectual traditions in opera directing.

The Special Prize of the Expert Council for the Revival of the Leningrad Traditions of the Laboratory of Contemporary Opera went to Valery Gergiev.
