On 10 March Mariinsky Ballet Company soloist Anastasia Matvienko will be performing the lead role in George Balanchine’s ballet Serenade to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for the first time.

The ballet Serenade – an acclaimed masterpiece of neoclassical choreography – will broaden the dancer’s repertoire; she already performs a solo role in this legendary choreographer’s Symphony in C.

“Many people consider that Serenade has a hidden plot, though this is not in fact true,” as George Balanchine dismissed this popular ballet myth in his book One Hundred and One Stories of the Great Ballets, which he co-wrote with Francis Mason. “In this ballet, the dancers simply move to beautiful music. The ballet’s only plot is the music of the serenade, if you like, it is a moonlit dance.”

The ballet Serenade, the world premiere of which was held in 1935 in New York at the Adelphi Theater, was George Balanchine’s first ballet production in the USA, where soon after he had emigrated the choreographer and Lincoln Kirstein and Edward M. M. Warburg opened the American Ballet School in New York. The choreographic drawing of Serenade emerged gradually, forming the result of evening ballet classes given by the choreographer.

The premiere of Serenade at the Mariinsky Theatre came on 30 April 1998. The production was staged in collaboration with the George Balanchine Foundation by the ballet-mistresses Francia Russell and Karin von Aroldingen.

Anastasia Matvienko’s repertoire includes the roles of Gamzatti in La Bayadère, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty and the lead role in Jerome Robbins’ ballet In the Night. In autumn 2009 Anastasia Matvienko performed the role of Odette-Odile in the ballet Swan Lake at the theatre for the first time to great acclaim.

Before she joined the Mariinsky Theatre in 2009, the ballerina was previously a soloist with the National Opera of Ukraine and later the Mikhailovsky Theatre, together with which she toured to renowned ballet theatres throughout the world.

</yandex:full-text>

The opera The Nose conducted by maestro Gergiev in New York

On 5 March Valery Gergiev conducted a premiere of Shostakovich’s opera The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

<yandex:full-text>

On 5 March Valery Gergiev conducted a premiere of Shostakovich’s opera The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The new production is the result of joint efforts of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Opéra National de Lyons and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. The Stage Director and Set Designer of the production is the highly acclaimed South African designer William Kentridge, who has won international renown thanks to his animated short films and charcoal drawings.

The role of Major Kovalyov was performed by Paulo Szot, the acclaimed Brazilian tenor of Polish descent who has received a Tony Award. The role of the District Inspector was performed by Mariinsky Opera Company soloist Andrei Popov. Mariinsky Theatre Concert Mistress Irina Soboleva was involved in preparations of the production.

Valery Gergiev will be conducting a further four performances on 11, 13, 18 and 23 March. On 25 March the opera will be conducted by Pavel Smelkov.

“The opera The Nose is a work that deals with the nightmares of a hierarchical system: in Tsarist Russia and in more recent Russian history, top-ranking officials traditionally gazed contemptuously on lower ranking staff,” the production’s director William Kentridge said in an interview on the website of the Metropolitan Opera. “As a director, first and foremost I am drawn by the phantasmagorical combination of chaos and the absurd in the plot. The opera gives the audience the sensation that absolutely anything is possible.”

Alongside the premiere performances of The Nose in New York there were be several events marking the occasion. The halls of the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Gallery, situated in the foyer of the Metropolitan Opera, will be hosting an exhibition of works inspired by the aesthetics of The Nose. Moreover, the Museum of Modern Art is organising a retrospective of William Kentridge’s works.

The Nose was Dmitry Shostakovich’s first opera, which he composed at the age of twenty-two in 1928.

Valery Gergiev first turned to this opera by Shostakovich in 2004. On his initiative, The Nose was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre for the first time. The Stage Director was Yuri Alexandrov. This production, grotesque and dynamic, received unconditional praise from audiences and critics both in Russia and abroad.

In 2009 at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre a recording of the opera The Nose was made with soloists of the Opera Company and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, the first disc to be released on the Mariinsky recording label.

The disc was released in summer 2009 and received several nominations for the prestigious Grammy awards, and it was also named one of the ten most significant classical music recordings of 2009 according to The Washington Post. The recording received a MIDEM Classical Award in the opera category and was nominated for a BBC Music Magazine award.

</yandex:full-text>

Debuts in the one-act operas L’Heure espagnole and Gianni Schicchi

On 7 March tenor Dmitry Koleushko will be performing the role of clockmaker Torquemada in Maurice Ravel’s opera L’Heure espagnole for the first time, while soprano Karina Chepurnova will be making her debut as Lauretta in Giacomo Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi. These operas, performed in Russian, will be performed on the same evening at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre.

The role of the feeble old clockmaker, whose young wife Concepción is secretly receiving her admirers and hiding them in long-case clocks, demands a strong character of the soloist. Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers soloist Dmitry Koleushko performs roles in operas such as Gioacchino Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, Sergei Prokofiev’s The Gambler and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Mariinsky Theatre. His debut as Torquemada marks a serious step in the singer’s artistic development.

The prototype for Ravel’s opera, written in a humoristic key, a true comedy of situations that revived the traditions of opera buffa, was, according to the composer himself, Musorgsky’s unfinished opera The Marriage after motifs from the eponymous work by Gogol.

Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers soloist Karina Chepurnova has appeared in the role of Musetta in Puccini’s opera La Bohème at the theatre to great acclaim. In late January during a tour by the Mariinsky Theatre to Moscow’s Golden Mask festival the singer gave a brilliant interpretation of the role of Susanna in Mozart’s opera Le nozze di Figaro. The opera Gianni Schicchi is based on lines from Dante’s poem The Divine Comedy which relates how the old rogue Gianni Schicchi fools his grasping relations by portraying himself as a dying rich man and compiling a false will in his name.

The role of Lauretta, Gianni Schicchi’s daughter who loves the young man Rinuccio but whom she cannot marry as she has no dowry, is one of the most romantic in the Puccini repertoire.

The performance begins at 11.30.

</yandex:full-text>

A debut in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni

Coloratura soprano Lyudmila Dudinova will be performing the role of Zerlina in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni for the first time at the Mariinsky Theatre on 5 March.

<yandex:full-text>

Coloratura soprano Lyudmila Dudinova will be performing the role of Zerlina in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni for the first time at the Mariinsky Theatre on 5 March.

The new role broadens the singer’s Mozartian repertoire, which already includes the roles of Papagena and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and the recent addition of Despina in Così fan tutte. Lyudmila Dudinova’s repertoire moreover includes the roles of Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata, Ninetta in Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Lyudmila in Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, Snegurochka in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden and Nanetta in Verdi’s Falstaff.

According to Kommersant newspaper, Dudinova, as well as having a powerful lyrical voice, also has “the ability to create integral images and live out their sufferings as part of her own life.”

The role of Zerlina demands not just the ability to cope with a complex and high tessitura from the singer, but also a masterful command of acting technique. The naive yet somewhat crafty simple girl Zerlina, innocently heeding Don Giovanni’s compliments in the seduction scene, appears as a deep, passionate and integral character in the scenes of the bridegroom Masetto’s all-consuming jealousy.

</yandex:full-text>

A performance by Academy students at the opening of the Year of Russia in France

Soloists of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers, directed by Larisa Gergieva, gave a concert for the first visitors to the exhibition A Window on Russia, which opened on 2 March at the Centre de Russie pour la science et la culture in Paris as part of the Year of Russia in France.

<yandex:full-text>

From 1 to 3 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was on an official State visit to the French capital, taking part in events of the Russian-French year of exchange. The opening ceremony of the exhibition A Window on Russia was attended by the Russian President’s wife Svetlana Medvedeva.

Promising young soloists of the Academy Andrei Serov and Yulia Matochkina together with accompanist Larisa Gergieva performed works by Russian and French composers for visitors to the exhibition. As Svetlana Medvedeva stated at the opening of the Window on Russia exhibition, projects involving young people form a key element of the cultural programme of the of the cultural programme of Year of Russia in France and of France in Russia. Fifty-eight young artists, graphic designers and sculptors from thirty regions throughout Russia have works on display at the exhibition.
